The design for the No. 5 Experimental Middle School is based on the themes of “rational knowledge” and “sensible living,” providing instruction at multiple levels as well as social spaces, and giving the campus a quiet and elegant but colorful and energetic learning environment. This planning concept is reflected throughout the design in several ways. First, the overall layout is sensibly divided according to varying degrees of openness and privacy in order to meet the functional needs for public and office space, as well as learning spaces and student dormitories. The structure of the project is organized around a “Court-Park-Field” spine of exterior spaces, each corresponding to learning, communication, and sports activities respectively. These three kinds of exterior space make the campus a haven for learning, socializing, and growing. The structure’s ground floor is raised above the landscape on stilts, and the main campus road is crossed by many small paths, connecting the landscape through the campus in a permeable way. In this manner, each component of the design reflects the green, open, and cutting-edge campus planning concept.
