The two principles of the plan are to establish a “
sense of place” and maintain “connectedness” of space, which are the essences
of a university, and what we regard as the essence of Tsinghua’s old campus
planning. Therefore, the center of the master plan is not any one building, but
a grand lawn, connected with courtyards with different degrees of openness to
form a network of open spaces. An arcaded walkway, along with greeneries,
encloses the open space; they connect all the buildings, and serve as an
element to cohere the campus as a whole. A bell tower and several buildings are
sited to define the boundary of the development relative to university roads.
The design can be seen as claiming the following: A university is more than a
collection of functionally rational buildings. A university is first and
foremost a place, identifiable as such through built fabric and urban space,
which expresses higher aspirations, a place where like-minded people gather in
pursuit of intellectual enrichment.
